Functional safety in industrial gas

Functional safety is a key part of the overall safety of a system or piece of equipment. It looks at how the system operates in response to its inputs and also factors in the management of operator errors, hardware or software failures and environmental changes.

IEC 61508 is the generic functional safety standard and its main function is to ensure the safe operation of a system or piece of equipment without any harm to life, the environment or the equipment itself.

The Safety Integrity Level (SIL) defines the reliability of the safety function in a product. SIL is defined in 4 classes, from SIL 1 (the lowest required reliability level) to SIL 4 (the highest required reliability level)

Lower level SIL targets allow companies to self assess however this should only be done by a TüV certified expert for functional safety, Higher lever SIL targets may require a third party assessor.

At iGAS all our engineers are experienced in the safe implementation of functional safety into our systems and we also have a TüV certified expert in functional safety to ensure the proper practices are followed.
